THE SHORT STORY
VCU men's soccer dropped its Atlantic 10 opener to St. Bonaventure on the road on Saturday as the Bonnies scored a pair of goals to answer the Rams' early lead. SBU won 2-1.

  • Mohammed Ibrahim scored his first goal of the season
  • VCU outshot SBU 11-10 and the teams were even with five shots on goal apiece
  • Andrey Salmeron's three shot attempts led VCU, while all five shots on goal came from different Rams
  • Winston Jory made four saves in the Bonnies' net, Manuel Monteiro had three for VCU
  • The Rams led the contest with six corner kicks to St. Bonaventure's three

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCU opened the scoring in just the 10th minute as Ibrahim weaved around a pair of Bonnies defenders at the corner of the penalty area and fired a laser past the diving hands of Jory
  • St. Bonaventure converted on a corner to tie the game at 1-1 as Holt tipped a bouncing ball over the head of Monteiro
  • Holt took the decisive lead for the Bonnies in the 30th minute, getting a head on the perfect ball-in to sneak the second SBU goal into the corner
  • VCU limited the Bonnies to just one more shot on goal and had a pair of on-target strikes themselves, but were unable to find the back of the net with an equalizer

"We made significant progress in many areas today with the ball, but similar to Monday we didn't convert our control into enough full chances. In a game like that, we finished with 11 shots and five or six on goal and six corners, and it should be more like 25-30 shots with 15-18 on goal and 12-15 corners. Part of that [credit] has to go to the opponent for working really hard and defending together—and also obviously the field is tough for a team that plays with the ball—but the biggest part has to come to us with our overall understanding and execution of how we will create a multitude of higher-percentage chances while limiting the opponents' opportunities. Especially in a game like that. Now we have a week to prepare for the next one for the first time all season," Head Coach Dave Giffard said.
