The short story: Junior
Tanner Cadieux sank a 10-foot putt on the final hole to clinch a historic victory, while sophomore
North Chery recorded one of the finest individual performances in VCU Golf history this week at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn. VCU has won back-to-back events and has captured three team titles overall in five tournaments this fall.
Â
FIRST TEE
- Behind Tanner's clutch putt, VCU secured a 1-stroke win over Eastern Michigan. But it wasn't just a dramatic win. The Rams shot 42-under for the week, which shattered both tournament and program scoring marks. VCU's previous best 54-hole score, in relation to par, had been 36-under at the 2022 VCU Invitational
- Eastern Michigan (-41), No. 27 Toledo (-40) and No. 8 East Tennessee State (-29) rounded out the top four in the team standings
- Remarkably, VCU sizzled its way to victory without the benefit of a career-defining performance by Chery, who was playing as an individual. Chery shot 64-69-69 across the 7,147-yard Blackthorn layout to place third at 14-under. His stroke total (202), score in relation to par (-14) and first round total (64) all tied program records
- Cadieux shot 13-under (70-66-67=203) to place sixth. Only three Rams, including Chery this week, have shot better than 13-under in school history
- Freshman Theo Archer (64-74-69) claimed a share of 14th for the Black and Gold, while sophomore Rami Samawi (70-69-70) and junior David Fuhrer (73-70-66) tied for 16th

INSIDE THE SCORECARD
- VCU led the field in Par 4 scoring (3.90) and was second on Par 3s (3.08) and third on Par 5s (4.58)
- Chery and Archer each carded 19 birdies, second-most in the fieldÂ
NOTABLE
- Chery is now tied with Vincent Nadeau (2009) and Adam Ball (2015) as the only players to shoot 14-under in a 54-hole tournament for VCU. Nadeau, Ball and current PGA pro Lanto Griffin were the only Rams to previously shoot 202
- The Rams shot 272 in both the second and third round, which are tied for the sixth-lowest ever by a VCU team
- While VCU broke the school mark for score, in relation to par, the also narrowly missed the program record for total score. Only VCU's 821 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in 2019 was better
- VCU has won four tournaments (including last season's Bentwater Intercollegiate) in a calendar year for the first time since 2000
NEXT UP
VCU's fall season is complete. The Rams will return to competition Feb. 7-9 when they travel to Cancun, Mexico for the Compadres Collegiate.
