Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)

THE SHORT STORY: VCU baseball couldn't dig out of an early hole as it fell in its third game to Penn State at home on Saturday.

LEADING OFF:
  • Sean Swenson tied his career high with three hits, belting a home run
  • Freshman Adrian Jimenez drove in three runs
  • In his first appearance as a Ram, Carter Richey reached base three times on a hit, walk and HBP, coming around to score twice
  • Casey Kleinman had his first two-hit game of the year and scored a run
  • With two runs, Trent Adelman set a career high, and his pair of RBI tied his career best from 2024
  • Cooper Campbell had a brilliant start to his performance, going 4.0 innings and allowing just a pair of baserunners, bur Penn State managed to scratch across three runs
  • Nick Frers closed the game for VCU, giving up two hits in a scoreless frame
  • Penn State earned the win in the teams' first meeting

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Penn State got on the board first, doubling in a run in the first frame before scratching across four more in the top of the second
  • The Rams started the second with back-to-back singles from Swenson and Kleinman, advancing into scoring position on an error by the Nittany Lions shortstop
  • Adelman cleared the bases with a double and came around to score on a Jimenez sacrifice fly to cut the visitors' lead to two runs, 5-3
  • Penn State put up another crooked number in the third, adding a pair of runs on a home run
  • Richey scored on a wild pitch after smacking his first hit in the Black and Gold into right field
  • Campbell, who took over in the third, held the Nittany Lions off for four scoreless frames before two more home runs extended their lead
  • Adding four more runs in the eighth, Penn State took a 10-run lead
  • Swenson smoked a first-pitch, 419-footer to center field for his second home run in as many weekends and Jimenez scored a pair on a single through the left side
  • Two more runs in the ninth inning solidified Penn State's 16-7 victory
