RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Baseball star seniors
Brandon Eike (Powhatan, Va.) and
Christian Gordon (Agricola, Va.) are set to begin chasing their Big League dreams after they were selected Tuesday on Day 3 of the MLB Draft.
Eike, the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year and 2024 A-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 13
th round of the MLB Draft Tuesday with the 393
rd overall pick. It's the same organization that selected the Rams' Tyler Locklear in the second round of the 2022 draft. Locklear shot through the Mariners organization and made his Major League debut earlier this year.
Eike batted .378 this season with 14 homers and 62 RBIs, and his 27 doubles this year are a program single-season record. In two seasons in the Black and Gold since transferring from North Carolina, Eike hit .363 with 25 homers and 133 RBIs in 116 games, all starts. Eike ranks sixth on VCU's career list in batting average and doubles (51) and is eighth in home runs.
Gordon, who was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 16
th round (474
th overall), heads to pro ball following a breakout senior campaign that saw him garner All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors. The 6-foot lefthanded starter fashioned an 8-2 record with a 3.62 ERA on the mound in 2024. The Agricola, Va. native struck out 102 – fifth-most in program history – across 79.2 innings.
The senior southpaw capped his outstanding 2024 campaign with an unforgettable two-hit, 13-strikeout masterpiece in a win over Wake Forest in the NCAA Greenville Regional, in which he shut out the Demon Deacons for 7.2 innings.
