RICHMOND, Va. — Three VCU Rams took home Atlantic 10 Conference weekly awards in the opening week of the outdoor season, the league announced Wednesday.
Junior
John Casper won A-10 Men's Field Performer of the Week. Casper finished the weekend on top of the A-10 in the hammer throw (56.62 meters) and the discus (50.73) events. This is Casper's first weekly award of the outdoor season, but second in 2024. The junior thrower picked up one Field Performer of the Week citation this winter during indoor season.
Freshman
Madison Griffin won A-10 Women's Rookie of the Week for her javelin performance at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational. Griffin threw 46.07 meters, a personal best and a possible regional qualifying mark, and was the highest placing freshman in the event.
The Rams swept the rookie awards, as freshman
Chanan Mathis won Men's A-10 Rookie of the Week. Mathis' 21.55 time at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational 200-meter dash is tops in the A-10 this spring. Wednesday's honor is Mathis' second A-10 weekly award. He captured Rookie of the Week once during VCU's indoor season.
