RICHMOND, Va.- VCU Women's Track & Field junior thrower Gudrun Hallgrímsdóttir has qualified for the European Athletics U23 Championships taking place July 12-16 in Espoo, Finland, per the final entries released by European Athletics last week.

Hailing from Iceland, Hallgrímsdóttir made the international meet for the hammer throw, and she is currently ranked 17th in the European U23 Women's list in the event. Hallgrímsdóttir attained that ranking on the strength of her VCU school record throw of 65.42m to finish fourth in the hammer at the NCAA East Preliminaries. With that finish, Hallgrímsdóttir then advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where she earned second team All-American honors for her 15th-place finish.

This is the second European competition of the summer for Hallgrímsdóttir, as she represented Iceland at the European Athletics Team Championships in Chorzów, Poland last month, placing 10th overall in the Second Division hammer throw.

Hallgrímsdóttir's meet gets underway on Thursday, July 13 with the qualifying round at 9:40 a.m. in Espoo (2:40 a.m. Eastern Time). If Hallgrímsdóttir advances, she will then compete in the final on Friday, July 13 at 7:45 p.m. local time (2:45 p.m. Eastern Time).
