NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Chelsea Davis,
Selkis Elong,
Jordyn Evans,
Jaylin Pate, and
Kayelyn Tate have been named to the 2023 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field All-Rookie Team, while Gudrun Hallgrímsdóttir earned a spot on the A-10 All-Academic Team, per the release from the conference office on Tuesday.
For Hallgrímsdóttir, the All-Academic honor is the latest accomplishment in a season full of highlights. The Hvanneyri, Iceland, native finished fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA East First Round meet on Thursday, May 25, setting the VCU school record of 65.42m. With that performance, Hallgrímsdóttir qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, on June 7-10. Hallgrímsdóttir also excelled in the classroom, majoring in Biology with a 4.0 GPA as a sophomore this school year.
Hailing from Dusseldorf, Germany, Elong earned her All-Rookie spot by setting the VCU school record in the long jump at 6.20m, a record that had previously stood since 2009. With that performance, Elong qualified to compete in the NCAA East First Round meet.
Like Elong, Tate made the trip to Jacksonville for NCAA East, making the cut for the 100-meter dash. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Tate's fastest wind-legal time of 11.55 puts her third in VCU history for the 100m. Tate also ran a wind-aided 11.40 at the Vertklasse Meeting on April 1.
Davis, a resident of Atlanta, Ga., had a stellar rookie campaign as the top A-10 newcomer in the triple jump, posting a mark of 12.30m to finish fifth at the A-10 Outdoor Championships. Davis was also named to the Indoor All-Rookie Team for her efforts in the triple jump.
Just like the indoor season, Evans took the All-Rookie spot in the 400m, setting a personal record of 55.60 to place eighth at the A-10 Outdoor Championships. The Woodbridge, Va., resident ran just fast enough to crack VCU's top 10 list in the 400m at 10th all-time.
Coming from Charlotte, N.C., Pate led all A-10 rookies in the 200m, posting a time of 24.28 at the A-10 Outdoor Championships to finish fifth overall.
