The Short Story: Led by senior Courtney Higgins, VCU's multi-event athletes turned in several personal bests over the two-day Duke Invitational.
 
 
WOMEN'S HEPTATHLON – DAY 1
  • Higgins turned in a personal best of 14.23 in the 100-meter hurdles to place sixth and collect 946 points in the first event of the day. Sophomore Taylor James ran a season-best 15.87 in the event
  • Sophomore Jailah Channer cleared 1.60m in the high jump for 736 points. The mark, which equaled her personal best, was good for sixth place. Higgins cleared 1.54m for 666 points
  • Higgins placed ninth in the shot put with an 11.01m mark, collecting 596 points
  • In the 200-meter dash, the final event of the day one, Higgins (25.83) picked up 812 points, placing seventh, while Channer ran a personal best (26.32) to grab 769 points
  • Higgins finished day one with 3,020 points, Channer with 2,777, and James with 2,442
 
MEN'S DECATHLON – DAY 1
  • Senior Mykalee Atkins ran a personal best of 11.10 in the 100-meter dash, good for fourth place and 838 points. He also set a personal best of 10.65m in the shot put
  • Atkins finished day one with 2,949 points
 
WOMEN'S HEPTATHLON – DAY 2
  • James set personal bests in the long jump (4.81m) and 800 (2:38.49)
  • Channer set a personal best of 30.68m in the javelin throw
  • Higgins placed eighth in the 800 with a time of 2:30.52, collecting 686 points, while Channer followed in 2:31.76 for 671 points
  • Higgins turned in her second-best performance ever in the event, totaling 4,816 points, good for ninth place overall. Channer (4,507 points) and James (3,786) both set personal bests
 
MEN'S DECATHLON – DAY 2
  • Atkins placed eighth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.12, good for 719 points. He also set personal bests in the discus (36.54m, fifth place) and pole vault (3.40m)
  • Atkins narrowly missed his personal best in the event, securing a final point total of 5,423

The Rams travel to Harrisonburg, Va. for the JMU Invitational on Saturday, April 16. The meet will be streamed on FloSports.
