The Short Story:  Lonica McKinney scored a hat trick in the first 27 minutes of action as VCU raced out to a 3-0 lead in a dominating win over Villanova.
 
QUICK FACTS:
  • McKinney scored a career-high four goals in the win and pushed her season total to five goals through the first two games. She scored her four goals on an efficient five shot attempts, all of which were on goal
  • Janne Wetzel scored a goal and had three shot attempts
  • Ashlyn Hughes scored one goal on her lone shot attempt
  • Maggie Goodwin scored her first collegiate goal and had two shot attempts
  • Maite Sturm and Bridget McCormick recorded two assists while Svea Sturm, Litiana Field, Mackenzie Williams and Camila Rosenbrock each had one assist on the day
  • Sasha Elliott made five saves in goal for the Rams
  • VCU outshot Villanova 20-10 overall and 16-6 in shots on goal. The Rams also held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners
  • Villanova's only goal was scored by Meghan Mitchell who tied for the team-high with two shot attempts
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • VCU opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game as McKinney scored on an assist from McCormick and led 1-0 after the first quarter
  • McKinney then scored twice in a 3:28 span midway through the second quarter to give the Rams a 3-0 lead at halftime. Her second goal was assisted by Williams and McCormick while her third of the game was assisted by Rosenbrock
  • The Black and Gold picked up the third quarter right where they left off when Janne Wetzel scored less than three minutes in off a penalty corner
  • The Wildcats cut the deficit to 4-1in the 40th minute of the game on a penalty corner of their own but the Rams answered less than two minutes later as McKinney scored her fourth goal to make it 5-1
  • VCU got two fourth quarter goals to extend the lead even further with Goodwin scoring her first collegiate goal to make it 6-1 and Hughes put the final exclamation point on the win in the 59th minute for the final 7-1 margin
