THE SHORT STORY: VCU got out to an early 2-0 lead before the Demon Deacons tied the game 2-2 late in the third quarter. Janne Wetzel scored the game-winner, her second goal of the day, in the 49th minute off a penalty corner and the Rams held on for the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Rams doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute as Wetzel converted a penalty corner on assists from Maite and Svea Sturm
  • Wake Forest answered just before halftime as Friedman dribbled down the end line and pushed a shot past Elliott at the near post to make it 2-1
  • The Demon Deacons tied the game at 2-2 in the 44th minute as Dickman turned, flicked the ball past a VCU defender and beat the goalkeeper with a chip shot
  • Wetzel gave VCU the deciding goal in the 49th minute on another penalty corner, this time finding the upper corner
  • Elliott made three saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the win
