THE SHORT STORYĀ
The Rams snapped a five-game losing skid Wednesday with a decisive 8-4 win over The Citadel to cap off a six-game road stretch.Ā
LEADING OFFĀ
- Brandon Henson and Steven Carpenter lead the way offensively with two hits and two RBI a piece. Andrew Puglielli also added two RBI.
- Six Rams recorded hits on the afternoon, with five notching RBI.Ā
- Mason Delane earned his fifth start of the season and threw three innings, giving up only one run.Ā Ā
- Edwin Serrano was solid out of the bullpen, throwing three and a third innings, allowing just one run.Ā
HOW IT HAPPENEDĀ
- The Rams took an early lead after scoring three runs in the top of the third. After Josh Simon was hit by a pitch and a Bulldogs error, VCU had runners on first and second with just one out. The Rams kept things going when Steven Carpenter delivered an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Logan Amiss then completed the squeeze play with a successful sacrifice bunt and Brandon Henson delivered an RBI single to put the Rams up 3-0.Ā Ā
- The Citadel responded in the bottom of the third with a run of their own, but Delane was able to get the three outs he needed to limit the damage, keeping the Rams ahead 3-1.Ā Ā
- Things tightened up in the bottom of the fifth when the Bulldogs scored a run to cut the VCU lead 3-2.Ā
- It didn't take long for the Rams to answer back and balloon the lead. With one out, Tyler Locklear reached on an error which was followed by consecutive singles from Hunter Vay and Josh Simon to load the bases. Andrew Puglielli then delivered big with an RBI single that plated two more for a 5-2 lead. The Rams continued to pour it on when Hogan Brown delivered a ground ball for an RBI and Carpenter delivered his second RBI single of the game for a 7-2 lead.Ā
- The Citadel knocked on the door in the bottom of the sixth, but a beautiful throw from Jack Schroeder from right field got the out at home plate and kept the 7-2 VCU lead.Ā Ā Ā
- The Bulldogs were able to get another run across home plate in the bottom of the eighth to cut the VCU lead 7-3.
- The Rams got the run back in the top of the ninth to get back a five-run lead. Carpenter found himself on base yet again when he was hit by a pitch. Henson then notched his second RBI of the day with a triple that rolled all the way to the center field fence for an 8-3 lead.Ā
- In the bottom of the ninth, The Citadel tried to mount a rally, but was only able to plate one more run, giving VCU the 8-4 victory.Ā
