VCU Unable to Complete Comeback in 56-50 Loss to Davidson

The Short Story: VCU women's basketball could not carry the momentum from Wednesday's win at Dayton over into the weekend as Davidson defeated the Rams 56-50 on Sunday night. The Black and Gold is 0-3 against Atlantic 10 rivals at home this season.

OPENING TIP
  • Isis Thorpe tied a season high 17 points and five three-pointers. Thorpe was five-for-11 from downtown and is now 24 treys shy of the program record.
  • Keira Robinson scored seven points, grabbed five boards, and handed out five assists in an all around effort. Robinson leads the team in assists and steals.
  • Adaeze Alaeze also scored seven points, recording seven rebounds and tying a career high with three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Rams were unable to hold onto a 29-28 halftime lead and found themselves down eight after three quarters.
  • Down 13, with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, VCU began to cut into the Wildcats advantage.
  • A Curteeona Brelove layup and one sparked the late rally. Brelove followed with another layup and Thorpe answered with two three's to make it a 52-48 four-point game.
  • Alaeze drove for two with just over a minute left to play, but the Rams were unable to complete the comeback.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Once again, the Rams forced double-digit turnovers and continue to lead the A10 in turnovers forced, turnover margin, and steals.
  • VCU produced eight steals, forcing 15 Davidson errors. The Black & Gold scored 10 of their points off of Wildcats mistakes.
  • Davidson outscored VCU in the paint (30-20).
  • The Rams shot 32.2 percent (19-of-59) shooting, their lowest mark of the season and first time under 40% since their loss against Toledo (12/06).
  • The Black and Gold were limited to just six free-throw opportunities and were outrebounded 36-32. The Rams are 10-0 this season when they attempt more free-throws than their opponent and 9-2 when outrebounding foes.

  • The Rams will continue their season at George Mason on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
