The Short Story: The VCU Men's Soccer team concluded their trip to the Bay Area with a hard fought battle with No.16 Stanford on Sunday afternoon, falling the Cardinal, 2-0.

How It Happened

  • In the opening 10 minutes, Stanford had a pair of shots, both missing to keep the game scoreless.
  • In a span of 10 minutes, the Rams had registered three shots (two from Jorge Herranz and one from Simond Kargbo) all just barely missing the back of the net.
  • The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute with a goal from Foster Langsdorf. A few minutes later, Stanford looked to extend their lead, but was unsuccessful as Pierre Gardan was there to make the save.
  • Three minutes into the second half underway, Jason McGlothern looked for the equalizer, but the Cardinal goalkeeper Adam Epstein stopped that chance.
  • The Rams looked to tie it up again with a free kick by Dennis Castillo in the 60th minute, but the shot ricocheted off the goal post.
  • Stanford extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal from Adam Mosharrafa in the 67th minute.
  • VCU had another opportunity in the 77th minute from Rahim Costa-Dorsey, but the Stanford keeper continued to shut down their chances.

Quotable

  • "When you play against the best teams, the margin of error is very slim. If you don't quite do things right, you can pay for it on the scoreboard. Today was a good example of that. They took three shots on goal and we took two, However the game ended 2-0 for Stanford.  Those are the kinds of things that we have to control moving forward. We have continued to make gains on the ball and did well at times to play through a very good defensive team. We just have to keep going and focus on the process of continuing to improve." - Head Coach Dave Giffard
