OPENING VOLLEY

  • Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Young smacked nine kills and committed just one hitting error to pace VCU, but Iowa State, an NCAA Tournament team a year ago, used a balanced effort on the way to a 3-0 win at Memorial Gymnasium.
  • Freshman outside hitter Sahbria McLetchie added seven kills and an ace for the Rams. She provided back-to-back roll shot kills midway through the first set to give the Rams a 15-13 lead.
  • Sophomore libero Rebekah Strange led VCU defensively with 13 digs.
  • Iowa State hit .297 in the match and was led by Grace Lazard, who produced eight kills, four blocks and hit .538.
  • The Cyclones entered Saturday's match listed 29th in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll. Iowa State is currently receiving 59 votes.
KEY MOMENTS
  • VCU pulled even at 20-all in the first set, but couldn't assume control. Iowa State pieced together a 3-0 burst on a pair of VCU errors and a service ace by Ciara Capezio.
  • The Rams looked to extend the match in the third, and rallied within 14-12 at one point on back-to-back blocks by Tori Baldwin. But Iowa State would not be denied. The Cyclones promptly shut the door with an 11-3 run on the way to a 25-16 triumph.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Freshman Julia Adler saw her first collegiate action. The lefty from Ontario provided a kill and a block for the Rams.
