THROWERS LEAD RAMS TO FOURTH-PLACE FINISH AT ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • Short Story: The VCU throw squad combined for 51 of the team's 81 points to lead the Black & Gold to a fourth-place showing at the 2015 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Seniors Brandon Ruffin (shot put) and Ryan Coles (discus) both took home gold medals, along with classmate George Moore in the 400m dash.
The Highlights
  • Ruffin finished the meet with 24 points including a victory in the shot put with a toss of 58' 4", which set a new school record. He also finished second in the hammer throw (175' 10") and third in the discus (157'6"). Following his stellar performance, the senior was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Championship. 
  • Coles took home gold in the discus with a throw of 169'8". He also finished third in the shot put with a toss of 54'10".
  • Moore blistered the track for a time of 47.32, which earned him gold in the 400m.
  • Moore also helped the 4x400 relay squad claim bronze with a time of 3:13.67.
  • Sophomore Ben Melton followed up his sixth-place finish in the hammer throw on Saturday with a fourth-place showing in the discus, reaching a distance of 148'4".
  • Sophomre Racheed Davis finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 46'8".
  • The 4x100 relay squad earned a fourth place finish with a time of 42.07.
  • Freshman Justin Howlett finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 49'7".
