Alaeze Leads Rams Past UNCW 58-45

The Short Story: Senior Adaeze Alaeze had the best game of her collegiate career and the VCU defense continued to pressure opponents as the Rams advanced to 5-1 on Wednesday night. Alaeze set career highs for points scored and field goals made

OPENING TIP

  • Alaeze played 31 minutes, scoring 22 points, both career highs. The forward drained nine of eleven shots, including her first trey of the season, and was three-of-four from the foul line. The senior also racked up seven boards.
  • Junior Camille Calhoun remained consistent for the Rams, scoring 12 and registering five rebounds.
  • Senior Adaeze Alaeze paced VCU with five steals. The guard added six points and racked up eight rebounds.
  • Isis Thorpe and Jessica Ogunnorin had solid games for VCU. Thorpe had eight points, while Ogunnorin led the Rams with nine boards and chipped in six points.
  • Ashlee Mitchell dished out a team high six assists and Ashley Pegram grabbed six rebounds.
  • VCU used a balanced attack to get past the Seahawks, with nine Rams recorded at least one bucket.
  • The Rams limited UNCW to 32.7 percent (18-of-55) shooting, including 29.6 percent (8-of-27) in the first half as VCU headed to the locker up two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Rams outscored UNCW 18-10 to pull away in the third quarter.
  • VCU opened the half with an aggressive 11-0 run to jump ahead. A layup from Calhoun gave the Rams a 13-point advantage with four minutes left in the third quarter.
  • Half of Alaeze's points came in the third as the senior made four-of-five shots and added two at the line during the quarter.
  • UNCW chipped away in the fourth, but VCU was able to hold off the Seahawks and add another "W" to the win column.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • It was another all-around dominant effort for the Rams. VCU owned a 42-29 advantage on the glass. The Rams also turned 22 UNCW turnovers into 22 points. 
  • VCU outscored the Seahawks in the paint 26-20 and 17-8 on second chance opportunities.
  • The Rams improved to 25-17 against UNCW all-time and are now 2-1 versus the Seahawks under Head Coach Beth O'Boyle.

VCU will return to action Saturday, Dec. 5 as they take on Arizona State in Tempe. Tip-off in set for 5 p.m.
