VCU Takes Down #6 Georgetown in Overtime, 2-1

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 2, #6 Georgetown 1 (OT)
  • Records: VCU (3-2-0), GU (2-1-2)
  • The Short Story: With under a minute left to play in the first overtime, senior Jose Manel took a feed from junior Devon Fisher and netted the golden goal in VCU's 2-1 at #6 Georgetown on Thursday afternoon. Fisher had scored earlier in the game to even the score at 1-1 and send the game into overtime where Manel unleashed his heroics. It was the highest ranked opponent defeated by the Rams since 2011, when VCU took down #6 Georgetown on the road (no that's not a misprint).

How it Happened:

  • After a scoreless first half, Georgetown's Brandon Allen scored in the 49th minute to put the Hoyas up 1-0.
  • The first game-tying goal this season for VCU could not have come at a better time; Fisher scored his second goal of the season late in the second half to tie the game up at 1-1.
  • After nine minutes of overtime, a shot from Manel found the back of the net to give VCU the win. It was also Manel's second goal on the year.
  • The last time VCU defeated an opponent ranked this high was at the start of the 2011 season. That day the Rams traveled to sixth-ranked Georgetown, defeating the Hoyas in (you guessed it) overtime. The score that day was 1-0.

Quotable:

  • "Today was obviously a great result for us. Although we played very poorly, we stayed in the game, kept battling and got the win in OT. Sometimes when we aren't at our best, we are more dangerous than when we play well. Today, we'll take a tough ugly win." –head coach Dave Giffard
  • "It is a huge win away over #6 Georgetown. Our team kept believing and working hard no matter the circumstances, like the heat or that first goal, and we finally got the win in the overtime. We saw a lot of good things today that helped us win, but we have a lot of things we need to work on, too. I'm glad I got to score the game winning goal and help the team win, these guys worked so hard today and they all deserved it." –senior Jose Manel
  • "We knew it would be a hard game from the start. We had to battle and fight through all the tough moments defensively and wait for our chances to come. I'm proud of the hard work the team put in to keep us in the game."—junior Devon Fisher

Up Next:

  • Today's match marked the start of a four-game road trip for VCU. The Rams will play in Charlottesville against 15th Virginia on Monday, then travel way down to Albuquerque, N.M. to take on CSU Bakersfield and another top-10 team, the New Mexico Lobos. Those games will take place Friday, September 19 and Sunday, September 21, respectively.
