Box Score The Basics
Score: Liberty 69, VCU 53
Records: VCU (2-1), Liberty (1-1)
Location: Vines Center – Lynchburg, Va.
Short Story: Liberty jumped out to an early lead and maintained it throughout. Despite opportunities, the Rams were unable to overcome the deficit, dropping their first game of the season, 69-53. Sophomore Camille Calhoun led VCU with 17 points.
How It Happened
- Calhoun got things started, putting the Rams on the board first, but Liberty's Ashley Rininger tied it up, 2-2. The Lady Flames proceeded to take a lead, which they would not relinquish.
- Calhoun scored 13 of her 17 points in the first half.
- In the second half, the Rams cut Liberty's lead to six, 47-41, with a shot by freshman Curteeona Brelove, but the Lady Flames responded with five straight points.
- Shots by Calhoun and sophomore Keira Robinson continued to chip away at Liberty's lead, but the Lady Flames pulled away, sealing their win.
Quotable
- "Obviously I thought our team played hard for 40 minutes. When you are playing a team as big and as strong as Liberty, you have to make some outside shots and we didn't make as many as we would have liked," said head coach Beth O'Boyle. "Overall it was a great team effort, and I'm really excited how we are going to get a little better every night and hopefully when we start playing our next game we will be ready to go."
Beyond the Box Score
- This is the second time this season Calhoun has scored over 15 points.
- Robinson and junior Adaeze Alaeze had eight boards each, which is a season-high for both.
Up Next
- VCU continues its road swing with a game at Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday. The game time is set for 6:00 p.m., and can be heard on Ram Radio.
