ATLANTA, Ga. – Virginia Commonwealth University freshman
forward Jason
Johnson (pictured, right) scored a pair of goals, the
first of his career, and the Rams increased their league-leading
unbeaten streak to seven games following a 2-0 win at Georgia State
on Wednesday evening.
VCU, which posted its fourth shutout of the season, improves to
4-1-3 overall and 1-0-1 in Colonial Athletic Association
play. With the loss, Georgia State falls to 4-2-2, 1-1-0 in
conference action.
"Tonight was a dominating performance from start to finish,"
said VCU Head Coach Dave Giffard. "I was
very proud of the way we displayed patience to keep the ball for
long periods of time while we probed looking for chances to get
in. We did well to finish off the game tonight with a shutout
and it was nice to get Jason Johnson on the board with his first
two goals. Now we move on and prepare for Saturday's game
against a very good George Mason team."
Johnson scored his first collegiate goal and put VCU on top 1-0
in the 25th minute. The Saint Anne, Jamaica native
took a feed from classmate Jose
Carlos Castillo, maneuvered past Georgia State
goalkeeper Vincent Foermer, and deposited a strike into the lower
left of the net.
Sophomore Yoram
Mwila nearly gave the Rams, who held a 6-2 advantage
in shots during the first half, a two-goal lead in the
36th minute but his strike hit the post.
Mwila would go on to fire two more shots during the first 15
minutes of the second stanza but Foermer again came up with a pair
of saves. The Rams, who continued to pressure the Georgia
State defense, fired six of the first seven shots of the second
half.
Johnson put the game away with less than four minutes to go when
he scored his second goal of the night. Senior Jake
Van Yahres sent a cross into the box and Johnson's
header rattled into the net and the Rams took a 2-0 lead.
After VCU goalkeeper Gabriel
Rodriguez registered a save on a shot by Eric Lawrence
in the 50th minute, the Rams held off a Georgia State
attack the rest of the way and limited the Panthers to just two
shots during the final 40 minutes.
VCU held a 15-6 margin in shots and a 7-2 advantage in
corners.
The Rams remain on the road Saturday with a 5 p.m. match at
George Mason before returning home to Sports Backers Stadium on
Oct. 6 against CAA rival Old Dominion at 7 p.m.
