DENVER – Sophomore Kristin Boyd (Wilmington,
N.C.) blasted 13 kills and junior Courtney Hott
(Fredericksburg, Va.) recorded six blocks to spark
Virginia Commonwealth University to a 3-0 (26-24, 27-25, 25-21) win
over Denver Saturday at Hamilton Gymnasium.
Boyd hit .267 for the match and piled up 12 kills in the first
two sets to guide the Rams (2-12) to a pair of close victories. She
also added three blocks. Hott also provided six kills and hit .333,
while freshman Ciara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.)
delivered 34 assists and five kills.
VCU hit .248 for the match, including .379 in the final set as it
closed out the victory and halted a six-match losing streak. Four
of those losses came to teams ranked in the AVCA Top 25 Coaches
Poll.
Alex Turgeon led all players with 15 kills for Denver (6-8), while
Colleen King and Alyssa Bonelli chipped in 11 kills apiece.
The first two sets of the match featured 28 ties and nine lead
changes. The two teams were tied 16 times and exchanged the lead
eight times in the second frame alone. Denver was clinging to 24-23
advantage when Boyd ripped off three kills during a five-point
sequence to lock down a 27-25 VCU win.
The Rams return to action at Denver's Hamilton Gymnasium at 7
p.m. (EST) Saturday when they take on Middle Tennessee State.
