VCU SNAPS SKID, CRUISES TO 83-58 VICTORY AGAINST WILLIAM & MARY

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University senior guard Kita Waller (right) scored a team-high 20 points, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and the Rams snapped a two-game losing skid with an 83-56 victory against William & Mary Thursday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

VCU, which has won seven straight and nine of its last 12 against William & Mary, improves to 17-9 overall and 10-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Tribe slips to 11-14 and 4-10 in conference play.

"I think this might have been the most complete games that we have had on both ends of the floor for 40 minutes all season, maybe other than against Old Dominion," said VCU Head Coach Beth Cunningham.  "I'm extremely proud of the team and the way they bounced back after a tough week last week.  We had great balance and a lot of key contributions from a lot of different players.

"Every single one of them came ready to go.  I could tell yesterday in practice.  We had good enthusiasm and everyone was focused.  It certainly gives you confidence in games like this when you can go to a number of different players."

Junior guard Jessica Taylor poured in a career-high 16 points with a team-best four rebounds, four assists and three steals for VCU, while senior forward D'Andra Moss contributed 13 points and a game-high four steals for the Rams.

William & Mary sophomore guard Taysha Pye led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting.  Sophomore guard Janine Aldridge added 11 points and freshman center Jaclyn McKenna chipped in 10 for the Tribe.

VCU, which shot 61 percent (14-of-23) from the field in the opening period, jumped out to a 10-2 lead during the first five minutes of the contest before William & Mary pulled within six on the following possession.  However, It was as close as the Tribe would get the remainder of the night as the Rams used a 25-6 run over the next 10 minutes to go ahead 35-10 with 4:57 to go before the break.

William & Mary settled down and scored 12-straight points to get within 35-22 at the 1:24 mark.  Moss followed with a free throw and junior guard Ebony Patterson hit a jumper with three seconds showing and the Rams took a 38-22 advantage into the locker room.

VCU scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second half and pushed its lead back to 48-24 with 16:31 remaining.

The Rams maintained at least a 21-point lead and went on top by as many as 30 on two occasions the rest of the way.

VCU forced 24 William & Mary turnovers, while committing just 14 miscues.  The Rams also connected on 8-of-16 from 3-point range and the Tribe hit just 3-of-12 from behind the arc.

Eleven VCU players saw action against the Tribe with eight seeing more than 12 minutes, while a combined three players appeared off the bench in two of the Rams' previous three games – one against Drexel and two at Old Dominion.

"It's going to be critical here down the stretch and in the conference tournament to develop our bench," Cunningham said.  "It's something that we were trying to do tonight and the team was ready.  When they got their opportunity, they made the most of it."

VCU hits the road for a 1 p.m. Sunday matchup at George Mason before traveling to James Madison on Feb. 25.
