Box Score WILMINGTON, N.C. – Senior forward D'Andra Moss
(Atlanta, Ga.) poured in a game-high 22 points and the Rams pulled
away in the final four minutes of the second half to secure a 67-54
victory against UNC Wilmington Thursday evening at Trask
Coliseum.
VCU picks up its season-high fourth consecutive
victory and improves to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in CAA play. The last
time the Rams began league play with two straight wins came during
the 1999-2000 campaign. Meanwhile, UNC Wilmington falls to 5-8, 0-2
in conference action.
Senior guard Kita Waller (Gainesville, Ga.)
scored 17 points and registered a game-high seven steals for VCU,
while sophomore forward Courtney Hurt (Loganville, Ga.) contributed
12 of her 14 points in the second half, including several key
baskets down the stretch, and tallied seven rebounds off the
bench.
VCU limited UNC Wilmington's top two
scorers Brittany Blackwell and Greta Luksyte to eight and 11
points, respectively, while Treasure Johnson added nine points in a
reserve role for the Seahawks.
UNC Wilmington jumped out to an early 8-2 lead at
the 16:21 mark in the first half thanks to six VCU turnovers to
start the game. The Rams regrouped and used a 10-2 run over the
next five minutes to pull ahead 13-10 on a 3-pointer by Waller with
11:50 showing before the break.
The Seahawks took a 21-20 advantage on a free
throw by Kelsy Reitz with 4:38 remaining in the first half before
Waller gave VCU its largest lead of the period, 27-23, at the
charity stripe with 2:21 remaining. Each team traded baskets the
remainder of the half before VCU took a 29-26 advantage into the
locker room.
Neither team led by more than six points the
entire first half, while the each team shot 39.1 percent (9-of-23)
from the field, including 33.3 percent (2-of-6) from 3-point range
in the opening period.
VCU extended its lead to 34-26 just three minutes
into the second half and never trailed the remainder of the game.
However, UNC Wilmington used a 13-5 spurt to tie the score at 39-39
with 11:29 remaining.
The Rams held a five-point lead on three
occasions over the next two minutes before the Seahawks pulled
within 49-48 on a pair of Johnson free throws with 5:42 to go.
Senior guard La'Tavia Rorie (Charlotte, N.C.) and Waller hit
back-to-back 3-pointers and the Black and Gold responded by scoring
18 of the final 26 points to pull away.
VCU shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the field,
including 52 percent (13-of-25) in the second half. UNC Wilmington
shot just 38.5 percent in the game.
The Rams will look for their third-straight CAA
win on Sunday with a 2.p.m. matchup against Towson at the Verizon
Wireless Arena.
