Box Score FORT MILL, S.C. – Senior forward D'Andra
Moss (Atlanta, Ga.) (right)registered her second
double-double of the season with a game-high 19 points and 10
rebounds to lead VCU to a 65-51 victory against Winthrop on Tuesday
evening at the LifePointe Community Center.
With the win, VCU picks up its second-straight
against a Big South opponent in as many games and improves to 5-2
on the season, while Winthrop slips to 4-5.
Senior guard La'Tavia Rorie
(Charlotte, N.C.) finished with 13 points and three
assists for the Rams and sophomore forward Courtney Hurt
(Loganville, Ga.) chipped in 10 points with a game-high
five steals off the bench.
Jessica Fansler led Winthrop with a team-high 18
points and three assists. Katie Fitzgerald added seven points
and Mary Hathaway scored six points for the Eagles.
VCU went up 15-7 on a jumper by Moss at the 13:38
mark in the first half before Fansler scored seven-straight points
for Winthrop to pull the Eagles within one. Hurt answered for
the Rams on the following possession and scored six of the next
eight points to put VCU back on top 23-14 with 7:46 to go before
the break.
Winthrop cut the VCU lead to five with 6:30
remaining but it was as close as the Eagles would get the remainder
of the half. The Rams used a 14-2 run to go up 37-20 with
2:36 showing and took a 41-26 lead into the locker room.
VCU scored 17 points off 15 Winthrop turnovers in
the opening period, while commanding the boards with 19
second-chance points.
The Rams maintained their lead to start the
second half and went up 60-42 on a 3-pointer by Rorie with 6:28
remaining. Winthrop answered with a 9-2 run to pull within 11
points with 2:06 to go. However, sophomore Jennifer
Lane (Wichita, Kansas) hit 3-of-4 free throws down the
stretch and VCU overcame a 14.3% shooting effort in the second half
to hold off the Eagles' rally.
The Rams shot a season-best 87.5% (21-of-24) from
the charity stripe, including a perfect 10-for-10 effort from
Moss.
VCU returns to the court on Saturday, December 19 for an 8 p.m.
EST tipoff against UNLV in the first game of the Duel in the Desert
Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.
