Former VCU Volleyball standout Mariel Frey made the transitionfrom the court to the sidelines in 2011 as an undergraduateassistant coach. Frey enjoyed a successful four-year career forHead Coach James Finley’s Rams from 2007-10.
A veteran of more than 125 collegiate matches, Frey’sexperience in the collegiate arena will be a welcome addition toFinley’s staff. A 5-11 outside hitter, Frey compiled 989career kills, good for fifth on VCU’s all-time list.
Frey, selected co-captain by her teammates, enjoyed her finestcampaign in a VCU uniform in 2010, averaging a team-best 2.54 killsper set. She tacked on 2.11 digs and 0.64 blocks per set, whilerecording a team-high 35 service aces. For her efforts, Frey wasselected to the All-Colonial Athletic Association SecondTeam.
As a junior in 2009, Frey averaged a personal-best 2.66 kills and2.88 digs per set as the Rams finished 27-9 and captured theirfirst CAA regular season championship. That year, Frey earned a CAAAll-Tournament Team citation, as well as All-Tournament Team at theVCU/Third Degree Sportswear Invitational and CAA Player of the Week(Aug. 31).
A native of Lititz, Pa., Frey is majoring in elementaryeducation.
