Â
LEADING OFF:
- VCU's pitching staff combined for 17 strikeouts for the second time this season, marking the first time the Rams have had multiple 17-strikeout games in a season since at least 1999
- The Rams struck out just twice at the plate
- Nick Flores led the Rams with three hits, two doubles and a career high-tying four RBI
- Michael Petite had a pair of runs, hits and RBI in the game
- Petite extended his reached-base streak to 23 games and Alec Warden extended his to 20
- The Rams tied the most conference wins in program history with the 19th of their Atlantic 10 season, most recently done in the Rams' 2022 A-10 Championship season
- Eli Holbert struck out seven in his 4.2 innings, but surrendered seven hits and five runs
- Cooper Weygandt fanned three and allowed one hit and an unearned run in his 1.0 inning
- The pitcher of record for VCU, Zach Peters matched Holbert's seven strikeouts and gave up a run and a hit in 3.0 frames
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- VCU used two-run base hits from Flores and Petite in the first and second innings, respectively, and a bases-loaded balk to work up a healthy 5-0 lead early in the game
- Both teams plated one run in the third inning, before Davidson came all the way back to tie the game at 6-6, using a big fifth inning and a Rams fielding error in the sixth
- Timely hitting made its name in the seventh as Flores led off the frame with a double and Warden blooped a two-out single to left field to take the lead back for VCU, 7-6
- The Rams plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Flores' second double of the day and Peters stranded three Wildcats on base in the visitors' half of the ninth frame to limit the damage to a run and secure the 9-7 victory
