LETHERT WALKS OFF WILDCATS WITH SENIOR DAY HOME RUN, 12-9

Score: VCU 12, Davidson 9
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 31-22 (19-10), Davidson 25-25 (16-13)

Despite playing in broad daylight, VCU baseball brought the fireworks in its final game in the Rams' longtime home. Catcher Teige Lethert, who was honored among the Rams' seven seniors prior to the contest, launched a towering three-run home run to walk-off the weekend sweep of Davidson, 12-9.

LEADING OFF:
  • The Rams struck out 15 batters in the game, reaching 41 strikeouts on the weekend, which is the most in a weekend series since April 2016
  • VCU recorded its program record 20th conference win
  • With three home runs, the Rams reached 62 on the season, the third-most in program history and just four shy of the team program record
  • Five Rams were hit by six pitches, tying the most this season and reaching the third-most in a season in program history (109)
  • Alec Warden led the Rams offense with a 3-3 performance, a home run, HBP and sacrifice fly, driving in three runs and scoring two
  • Lethert and Nick Flores each recorded two hits, including a home run
  • Dawson Newman started on the mound for the Rams, going 2.0 innings without allowing a run and fanning three Wildcats
  • Hunter Gotschall, who tossed a career-high six strikeouts, earned his third win as a Ram, going the final 3.1 innings, surrendering just a pair of hits and one free pass, while allowing only one unearned run to score
  • Senior Everett Vaughan (1), Caleb Clover (3) and Cooper Weygandt (2), combined for the rest of VCU's 17 strikeouts

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • VCU used a pair of scoring innings to take a 5-0 lead through three frames, using a Flores home run to break open the game in the second frame before plating three Rams in the bottom of the third
  • Trading runs, Davidson scratched four across through the fifth inning before VCU answered with four runs of its own in the home half of the frame, climbing to a 9-4 lead
  • The Wildcats finally worked their way to a 9-9 tie in the eighth, following a four-run sixth inning
  • Gotschall's lone run was the tying run, but his quiet ninth inning poised VCU to make its decisive comeback bid in the bottom of nine
  • Although Warden led off the frame with a single, a two-out walk from Petite passed the baton for Lethert to hammer the walk-off three-run shot to right field and lift the Rams to a sweep of their final A-10 weekend, 12-9
