RAMS SWEEP SAINT JOSEPH’S ON SENIOR DAY

Score: VCU 4, Saint Joseph's 0
Location: Richmond, Va. (Thalhimer Tennis Center)
Records: VCU 8-13, Saint Joseph's 15-10

The Short Story: VCU Men's Tennis controlled the match from start to finish, sweeping the doubles point and winning three singles courts to secure a 4-0 victory over Saint Joseph's on Senior Day.

Quote from Coach Kutrovsky: "Glad we were able to defend home court on senior day. Good doubles, and we stayed tough in the big moments. Shows some growth even if we didn't play our best tennis we were able to get the win. Looking forward to a-10 next week!"

Opening Serve
  • The Rams delivered another complete performance, building on their strong showing against Duquesne with contributions across the lineup. With the win, the Rams remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play and improve to a perfect 7-0 all-time against Saint Joseph's.
  • The Hawks entered the match in strong form, winning eight of their last 10 contests, including victories over conference opponents Fordham, St. Bonaventure, and Duquesne. Despite that momentum, the Hawks were no match for the Rams, who have been battle-tested against some of the nation's top competition and proved to be the better side from the start.
Doubles
  • On Courts 2 and 3, the Rams worked their way in front at 4-2 on both courts, putting themselves in strong positions. Mats Bredschneijder and Leon Zaorski followed through on Court 2, closing out a 6-4 win after holding their edge late. Alfred Almasi and Nicolo Consonni put together a clean performance on Court 3, keeping control from the early stages in a 6-2 victory.
  • Court 1 was tight all match, with the Ram duo of Gevorg Mnatsakanyan and Patrik Petera trading games to 3-3 and later 4-4 before the match was stopped.
Singles
  • Similar to doubles, singles featured a series of tight matches, but the Rams ultimately dug deeper and came through in key moments to secure the victory. On Court 5, Patrik Petera put together a near-flawless performance, winning the big points throughout and allowing just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory to give the Rams an early point. Petera has now won five of his last six matches and closed the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record.
  • Nicolo Consonni followed on Court 3 with a hard-earned 6-3, 7-6 victory. After taking the first set, Consonni built an early lead in the second before momentum began to shift. As the set tightened, he remained composed, and responded in the tiebreak to finish it off.
  • The clinching moment came on Court 1, where Gevorg Mnatsakanyan put together a gritty, resilient performance. After taking the opening set 6-1, he looked poised to carry that momentum into the second but fell behind 2-5. Despite the momentum from Saint Joseph's Santiago Valle, Mnatsakanyan responded by battling all the way back to even the set and force a tiebreak, where he closed it out 7-1 to clinch the match for VCU.
  • On Court 4, Alfred Almasi gave a strong showing on his Senior Day. After dropping the first set, he answered by taking the second and had built an advantage in the third set with no signs of slowing before play was halted.
  • On the remaining courts, Mats Bredschneijder had split the first two sets on Court 2 and was locked in the middle of a third, while Leon Zaorski held the edge in the second set of a competitive match on Court 6 before play was halted.
