The Short Story: VCU Men's Tennis opened Atlantic 10 tournament play with a strong performance, battling to claim the doubles point before cruising to three singles victories in a 4-1 win over Davidson.Â
Quote From Coach Kutrovsky: "Off to a good start today. We have a few areas where we can clean up a bit and continue the process we've been on all season. Strong performance from Patrik today."
Opening Serve
- Today marks the start of the A-10 Tournament, where the Rams will look not only to defend their 2025 title, but extend their streak of eight consecutive conference championships.
- Entering the match, VCU had faced Davidson five times in program history, with three of those matchups coming in Florida at the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Rams have won all five meetings, sweeping the Wildcats in four of them, including a 4-0 victory earlier this season in North Carolina.
Doubles
- Alfred Almasi and Nicolo Consonni found themselves trailing 1-3 early on Court 2 but refused to let the moment slip. They clawed their way back to even the score at 3-3, then again at 4-4 as the tension built. With momentum swinging in their favor, the pair broke through and closed out a gritty 6-4 victory to spark the Rams' push forward.
- Opposite of the performance on Court 2, Mats Bredschneijder and Leon Zaorski jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Court 3 and looked set to take the set. However, Davidson responded with a strong run to level the score at 3-3, and the set remained tight at 4-4 and 5-5. From there, the Rams duo regained control, winning the final two games to secure a 7-5 victory.
- Gevorg Mnatsakanyan and Patrik Petera looked in full control early on Court 1, racing out to a 5-0 advantage. Davidson's Goyo Hidalgo and Kai Villagomez responded with a four-game run to close the gap to 5-4, but Mnatsakanyan and Petera regrouped and were poised to close out the match when play was halted.
Singles
- Mats Bredschneijder got VCU on the board in singles with a composed 6-3, 6-2 win on Court 2, delivering the Rams' first singles point of the tournament. He established an early edge in both sets and maintained it, putting together a steady performance to close out the match in straight sets. With the win, he has now picked up two victories in his last three matches and is finding form at the right time for the Rams.
- Current Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Patrik Petera enjoyed another strong outing in his A-10 Championship debut. Competing on Court 5, he continued the Rams' momentum with a dominant performance, racing out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set and never looking back en route to a straight-set victory that put VCU within a point of victory. Petera has been in strong form of late, turning in another near-flawless performance against Davidson's Charlie Ratliff. With the win, he secured his third straight victory and improved to six wins in his last eight matches.
- Alfred Almasi delivered the clinching point on Court 4, his third of the season. After building a 4-1 lead in the opening set, Davidson's Sebast Carpio Moran responded by winning four of the next five games to level the score at 5-5. As it seemed Almasi's lead would slip, he regrouped at 5-5 and took the next two games to secure the set 7-5. From there, he carried that momentum into the second set, not dropping a game as he completed a 6-0 sweep to seal the match for the Rams.
