VCU baseball nearly staged a late comeback against George Washington, plating three unanswered runs in the final two innings, but was unable to complete its comeback bid. The Rams fell in their second one-run game of the series, 8-7.
LEADING OFF:
- Two Rams belted home runs in the contest, Nate Kirkpatrick and Quinn Maher
- Maher went 2-4, also smacking a double, driving in a career-high four runs
- Dante DeFranco had three hits in the game, leading VCU
- Brody Leyboldt made his first start at the plate, tallying his first hit and first run as a Ram in the ninth inning
- With a ninth-inning single, Michael Petite extended his hitting streak to a team-high eight games
- Cade Dressler tossed 1.1 innings, not allowing a hit and fanning two
- The Revolutionaries' offense was led with three hits apiece from Jack Kent and Travis Peitz and four RBI by Robbie Lavey
- George Washington outhit VCU 14-10
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Nate Kirkpatrick scored the first run of the game for the second-straight contest, this time on a home run in the fourth inning
- Patrick Steitz carried a scoreless game into the sixth inning, but GW plated a run in the top of the frame on a nearly-robbed home run to right-center field to tie 1-1
- The visitors broke the game open in the seventh inning, scratching four runs across on five hits to take a 5-1 lead
- VCU answered with a three-run frame on a run-scoring double from Alec Warden and Maher's two-run shot to bring the Rams back within one, 5-4
- Three George Washington runs crossed on wild pitches to regain an 8-4 advantage
- In the final two innings, VCU plated three more Rams, to once again pull within a run of the Revolutionaries, but stranded the tying run to fall 8-7
