Despite scratching two runs across in the eighth inning, VCU baseball's rally fell short of George Washington in the Atlantic 10 series opener on Friday at The Diamond. The Rams dropped the contest 4-3.

LEADING OFF:
- The Rams defense matched Tuesday's season-high three double plays, twice turning two in the infield and Jacob Lee throwing out a runner stealing on a strikeout
- VCU outhit George Washington, 7-6
- Nate Kirkpatrick went 2-2 with a run and an RBI, also getting on base with a pair of HBPs
- Trent Adelman also had a two-hit day at the plate
- Elias Holbert went 4.0 scoreless innings without allowing a hit in his start, matching his career-long outing for the second time this season
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Rams opened the scoring in the game on back-to-back doubles from Kirkpatrick and Lethert to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning
- Holbert held onto VCU's lead with four scoreless innings, but a pair of unearned GW runs came across on an error in the fifth frame to snap the Rams' shutout
- George Washington worked another two-run frame in the eighth, scoring a pair with the help of three base-hits to take a 4-1 lead
- VCU matched the two-run inning with an RBI double off the bat of Petite, before Kirkpatrick brought the Rams within a run on a rocket through the left side, 4-3
- The Revolutionaries held on to stave off the Rams' rally, taking the series opener
