The Short Story: VCU Women's Tennis dominated on every court, sweeping the doubles point and adding two singles victories to secure a 4-0 win over Duquesne.
Opening Serve:Â
- The Rams came into the match with a 9-10 record, going 2-3 in their last five contests, with both wins coming against Atlantic 10 opponents Richmond and George Mason. Conversely, Duquesne entered having won three of its last five matches, with victories over Binghamton, Mercyhurst, and Lafayette.Â
- VCU entered the all-time series against Duquesne with a perfect 3-0 record, highlighted by two sweeps and another victory in which the Rams conceded just one point. Today's match was no different from the series, as the Rams controlled the pace on every court and cruised to the win. Â
Doubles
- In doubles, the Rams controlled the point from the outset, jumping ahead on Courts 1 and 2 to take early momentum. On Court 2, Andrea Magallanes and Sofia Jane Thorne broke through first, turning a 4-2 lead into a convincing 6-2 win to put the Rams on the board. Moments later, Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando and Mariam Ibrahim followed suit on Court 1, extending their lead from 4-1 to 5-3 before closing out a 6-3 victory to clinch the doubles point.Â
Singles
- In singles play, the Rams carried their momentum into the lineup, securing two straight-set victories to seal the match as Duquesne forfeited Court 6.
- Sara Alba was first off the court on Court 5, delivering an emphatic performance and dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Sofia Jane Thorne followed on Court 1, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win after building a 3-1 lead and pulling away with a dominant second set which clinched the match for VCU.Â
- Mariam Ibrahim showed resilience on Court 2, jumping out to a 4-1 lead before the set evened at 5-5, then closing it out 7-5 and carrying that momentum into the second. Elicia Kim fought back from an early deficit on Court 3, turning a 1-3 start into a 6-3 first-set win and holding a 5-0 lead in the second. Andrea Magallanes also held control on Court 4, taking the first set 6-4Â and leading the second set 2-1 as play was halted.Â
