The Short Story:Â VCU trailed 7-1 but battled back early in the second half and cut its deficit to 8-4 with 5:09 left in the third quarter. The Rams were unable to get closer as Spiders scored six unanswered goals and pulled away.
OPENING DRAW:
- Sam Palmer had two goals and a team-high nine shot attempts
- Amelia Eilbacher had two goals and two caused turnovers
- Kenson Epperly had a goal and an assist
- Kiley Kozak scored a goal and Rachel Koeneke had one assist
- The Spiders led VCU in draw controls 20-3
- Richmond outshot VCU 31-25 overall and just 19-14 in shots on goal
- Richmond was led by Alexis Morton who had three goals and eight assists
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spiders struck early and took a 1-0 lead just 1:24 into the contest. VCU tied the game at 1-1 on an Eilbacher goal with 7:56 left in the first
- The Spiders scored six unanswered goals to build a 7-1 lead with 7:23 left before halftime
- VCU scored three of the next four goals to get back within 8-4 after a Palmer goal with 5:09 left in the third quarter
- The Rams offense struggled to find the back of the net and the Spiders scored six unanswered goals again to build a 14-4 lead with 8:19 left in the fourth quarter. VCU was unable to close the deficit
