RICHMOND, Va. - VCU Women's Tennis sophomore
Sofia Jane Thorne has been named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week following her performance against Howard on Saturday.
Against Howard, Thorne went 2-0, allowing her opponents just five total games across both singles and doubles competition. In doubles play, Thorne partnered with
Andrea Magallanes on Court 1 to earn a 6-2 victory over Howard's Imani Jean and Camille Hall. In singles, after conceding the opening two games, Thorne won 12 of the next 13 to secure a 6-3, 6-0 straight-sets victory and give VCU a 2-0 lead.
This season, Thorne has competed at No. 1 singles in all but one match, compiling a 6-2 record with four of those victories coming in straight sets. Thorne is also 5-2 in doubles with Magallanes on Court 1, with all but one of those victories decided by at least three games. The lone exception came in a tiebreak win over Longwood.
Thorne adds her first A-10 Player of the Week honor to an already impressive list of accolades, including a 2024-25 A-10 First Team selection, two A-10 Rookie of the Week honors (March 11 and April 15), ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition, and placement on the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. She was also named to the 2025-26 A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team.
