The short story: VCU and Virginia Tech were locked into a defensive battle as the Rams trailed just 6-3 with 8:54 left in the third quarter. The Rams were unable to overcome the deficit as Virginia Tech scored five of the game's final six goals.

  • The teams traded goals and VCU trailed 3-2 with 9:45 left before halftime. The Hokies scored two unanswered goals to lead 5-2 at the half
  • The Rams got within 6-3 with 8:54 left in the third quarter after Koeneke's lone goal of the afternoon
  • VCU was unable to get any closer as the Hokies scored four unanswered goals and five of the game's final six goals to pull away for the win.
