RICHMOND, VA. – Senior right-handed pitcher
Zach Peters was named Atlantic 10 co-Pitcher of the Week following his opening day performance, the league announced Tuesday morning.
Â
Peters kept intact VCU's first combined one-hitter since 2019, earning the opening day win in the Rams' weekend sweep of Holy Cross. He held the 1-1 tied score through the ninth inning, allowing VCU to walk off its final opening day at The Diamond.Â
Â
The fourth-year Ram tossed 3.0 scoreless innings without giving up a hit, allowing only one of his three total baserunners to advance past first base. He faced just 12 batters and seven of his nine outs recorded were by strikeout, just one shy of his single-game career best.
Â
Peters is the third Ram to be named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week following opening weekend since VCU joined the league in 2013. He joins
Owen Tappy (2024) and current head coach
Sean Thompson (2017).
Â
Individually, Peters' 21.00 strikeouts per nine innings ranks in the NCAA's top-nine, while his 0.00 ERA, zero hits allowed per nine innings and one victory are tied for the lead in the A-10.
Â
The North Haven, Conn., native's no hits allowed helped the Rams to lead the nation as a team with 3.24 hits allowed per nine innings through weekend one and sweep their first opening weekend since 2014.
Â
Peters and the Rams will be back in action on the road this weekend against Illinois and No. 6 Coastal Carolina in the Baseball at the Beach tournament. The four-game set in Conway, S.C., will be Friday-Sunday, Feb. 20-22 at Springs Brooks Stadium.
