RAMS NET FOUR GOALS, END FLYERS’ NINE-GAME UNBEATEN STREAK

Score: VCU 4, Dayton 3
Location: Dayton, Ohio / Baujan Field
Records: VCU 1-7-2 (1-2 A10), Dayton 6-2-3 (0-1-2 A10)

THE SHORT STORY
VCU men's soccer never allowed a Dayton lead, scoring a season-high four goals on Saturday night to hand the Flyers just their second overall and first Atlantic 10 loss of the year. Kimarly Scott, David Leavey, Mohammed Ibrahim and Lucas White all scored for VCU to mark a tally in the win column for the Rams for the first time this season.

PITCH-SIDE
  • Ibrahim (75:11) and White's (75:48) goals were separated by just 37 seconds
  • For the third time in the last four games, VCU had a player net his first goal as a Ram as Leavey tallied his first as a collegiate
  • White's game-winner was his first goal of the year to mark his third-straight goal-scoring season for VCU
  • Ibrahim and Scott took the joint lead in scoring on the team, each netting their second
  • Andrey Salmeron tallied an assist on the Rams' initial goal
  • Trevor Maloney made three saves between the posts
  • VCU was outshot 14-10 with four shots on goal to Dayton's six
  • The Rams conceded 11 corner kicks and drew one off the Fylers' defense
  • Dayton had not lost since its first game of the season, falling to then-No. 12 Akron, and snapped its nine-game unbeaten streak

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCU took an early lead as Scott made a sliding finish to net a nearly-saved attempt by Salmeron in just the third minute
  • The teams entered the half with a 1-1 tie after Cooper Lijewski chipped his seventh goal of the season over Maloney coming off his line to make a save in the 35th minute
  • Coming out of the half, Ibrahim sent a short pass into the top corner of the 18-yard box and Leavey went top-shelf to take back the VCU lead, 2-1
  • Dayton had another answer for the Rams, evening the score at 2-2 in the 66th minute
  • In the span of just 38 seconds, Ibrahim dodged a trio of Dayton defenders to give the Rams a lead and White drilled a 30-yard strike in off the upright for a 4-2 score in the 76th minute
  • The Flyers scored the game's final goal in the 89th minute, but VCU outlasted the last-ditch effort to take the A10 contest 4-3

QUOTABLE
"So proud of the guys. We've been making steps the last two weeks in training in the front half of the team, but it hadn't been showing up in games yet. Tonight it finally did and in one of the tougher places in the league for us to come and win—we got 4 goals and could have had several more. I told the boys today at pregame that I could feel it starting to turn, we just had to have the right mentality and keep playing one play at a time with purpose. We did that and now we're off the mark and ready for the business-end of the season," Head Coach Dave Giffard said.
