THE SHORT STORY: In a back-and-forth affair, the Rams rallied with a season-high 16 hits in the nightcap their a series-opening doubleheader against George Mason, taking down the Patriots with a score of 10-6 to even the series after falling behind on a pair of ninth-inning runs in the opening game, 4-2.

LEADING OFF:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
  • Performances on the mound headlined both teams' performances, with George Mason allowing just two runs and VCU surrendering only one earned run in the contest as Tappy posted five shutout innings after the Patriots' first run in the first frame
  • A two-run double from Kleinman gave the Rams their first lead of the series, driving in Flores and Adelman
  • Mason's Andrew Raymond belted a game-tying home run to right-center field in the top of the seventh
  • VCU carried the tied score into the ninth before two runs scored on an error in the middle infield for the 4-2 final

Game Two
  • George Mason scored first in game two, getting one run across in the first inning aided by a Rams error, but VCU had a quick answer as Kleinman, Adelman and Flores led off with three hits, for a 2-1 advantage
  • Trading crooked numbers over the next four innings, George Mason scored in the second and fourth frames on a sacrifice hit and RBI groundout, while Lee notched a pair of RBI on a groundout and sacrifice fly in the third and fifth frames
  • Two-out hitting from the visitors gave Mason a 6-5 edge with their first multi-run inning in the sixth, but VCU tied it up on an Adelman 13-pitch battle at the plate that ended with a sacrifice fly, 6-6
  • Campbell and Peters held off George Mason for the remaining three frames and VCU batted around in the eighth, racking up five hits including a two-run double by Flores and a run-scoring triple from Lee
  • VCU evened the series at one apiece, 10-6
