THE SHORT STORY: The Rams had a loud answer to Saturday's setback, posting their second shutout victory of the weekend to secure the series. The VCU offense collected 11 runs, six coming across on a pair of home runs from
Will Henson and
Jacob Lee, behind a stellar performance on the mound by
Miles Garrett,
James McGrady and
Owen Tappy.
Â
LEADING OFF:
- VCU tallied a season-best 11 runs in the contest and their six-run eighth inning was the most in a frame this year
- The 11 hits and 11 RBI were also season highs for the Rams offense
- Going 3.0 innings of no-hit ball, Garrett started his third VCU victory on the hill with four strikeouts
- In his fourth scoreless appearance, McGrady just a pair of hits over 3.0 innings of work, notching his first win of the season
- Closing the gem, Tappy tallied a save as he fanned two in 3.0 innings and allowed three hits to drop his ERA to a whopping 1.23
- Henson belted his second home run of the weekend and his second as a Ram
- Freshman catcher Lee tallied five RBI on two hits, also smoking his third career home run
- Casey Kleinman and Nick Flores each had a pair of hits in the game
- For the fifth time this season and the second this weekend, the Rams limited the opponent to five or fewer hits
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Setting the tone for VCU's second shutout victory of the weekend, Garrett shut the Tigers down in the opening frame with a double-play ball to erase a free pass
- Through the next two innings, Garrett allowed just one more baserunner on a walk before ending both his outing and the visitors' half of the third with his fourth strikeout
- Kleinman broke open the game with the first hit of the day by either team in the third inning and Adelman and Werchan followed suit in reaching base to the tune of a hit-by-pitch and single, respectively
- Lee roped his first multi-RBI hit of the afternoon into left field, giving VCU its first two runs
- McGrady took over in the fourth inning, allowing a single before retiring the next seven Tigers in order
- Posting another crooked number in the fifth frame to take a 5-0 lead, Henson blasted a three-run shot to center field
- The Rams opened their six-run eighth inning with four consecutive hits from Flores, Spencer Sullivan, Carter Richey and Kleinman, the latter scoring a pair
- Trent Adelman let a sacrifice fly rip and Richey came across to give VCU an 8-0 advantage
- With a full count and two outs on the board, Lee pulled the Rams' second long ball of the afternoon to left field, to score Kleinman and Sean Swenson and bring VCU's run total to 11
- An error at shortstop prevented a clean final inning for Tappy, but his second strikeout of the afternoon stranded a Tiger to conclude the shutout
