THE SHORT STORY: VCU baseball's steady stream of runs over the final three innings were not enough to come back from an early deficit against Davidson, who completed their weekend sweep with a 13-9 final on Sunday afternoon.
Â
LEADING OFF:
- Adrian Jimenez had his second multi-hit game in as many days, going 2-4 with an RBI, run and walk to extend his hitting streak to four contests
- Kannon Kleine started his first game as a Ram notching an RBI
- Will Henson, Sean Swenson and Nick Flores each hit their fourth home runs of the season, combining to drive in five runs
- Along with his homer, Henson was hit by two pitches and came around to score all three times on base
- Jacob Lee drew two walks, extending his team-long reached base streak to an impressive 13 games
- Zachary Peters tied his season-high six strikeouts over his 2.0 innings of work
- Max Moore had a solid outing out of the bullpen, going 4.0 innings for a career-long mark and striking out a season-high three batters with no walks, while allowing two runs
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Davidson put up a crooked number early, working up a 4-0 lead through the first inning
- On Kleine's sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Seth Werchan, the Rams cut the host's lead to two runs, 4-2
- Rebuilding their lead, the Wildcats tallied a pair in the bottom half of the second inning before adding a five-spot in the fourth aided by four Davidson hits
- Henson traded a bruise for a base to lead off the fifth inning and Swenson followed with a two-run jack to dead-center field to begin to chip away at the Wildcat lead of 11-4
- Back-to-back two-run innings by VCU were split by one more Davidson run, as Henson came around to score twice more and Swenson and Lee added runs of their own
- Moore held Davidson at bay in the bottom of the eighth, giving the Rams a fighting chance for a much-needed comeback victory, but Flores' solo shot to lead off the ninth was the game's final run
- VCU fell 13-9, dropping their second consecutive conference weekend
