THE SHORT STORY: VCU baseball pulled within a single run of host Davidson in the eighth inning, but a 10-run bottom of the frame brought the game out reach for the Rams as they fell in their second conference weekend, 19-11.
Â
LEADING OFF:
- Freshman Adrian Jimenez, who made his first start at third base had his first career three-hit game
- Trent Adelman hit his first career home run and Seth Werchan belted his first homer as a Ram
- Jacob Lee had a two-home run game, becoming the first Ram to homer in three consecutive games since Brandon Eike held the streak for four games last season
- With his seventh and eighth shots of the year, Lee reached the halfway mark to Tyler Locklear's 2021 freshman home run record of 16 in just 21 games
- Lee extended his reached-base streak to an impressive 12 games
- Freshman two-way Elijah Coston retired all five batters he faced, allowing an inherited baserunner to score on a sacrifice fly before sitting four Wildcats down in order on 12 pitches
- Will Henson joined Lee and Jimenez with a multi-hit game, reaching base with a pair of singles and a walk
- Nick April-Gath was hit by three pitches, the most by a Ram since 2018, and came around to score all three times
- Werchan also scored three runs in the game, a high for the Rams this season
- Despite giving up just eight earned runs, VCU surrendered a season high 19 runs
- Cade Dressler was the Rams' pitcher of record in the loss
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Davidson put up a crooked number in the first frame to start the game, belting a three-run home run to match VCU's early 3-0 lead from game one
- Adelman belted his first career homer in the top of the second frame before Davidson pressed ahead with six more runs over the next three innings for a 9-1 lead
- VCU had a big inning in the fifth, scoring four runs on a three-run homer from Lee and an RBI groundout by Nick Flores
- Jimenez led off the eighth inning with a double and the Rams made it a single-score game, drawing five free passes, three of which drove in runs
- The Wildcats returned with a 10-run bottom of the frame, scoring eight unearned runs aided by the Rams' second error of the day
- Back-to-back home runs by Lee and Werchan gave VCU its double-digit total in the ninth, but the visitors fell short, 19-11
