Meet: Doc Hale Invitational
Location: Blacksburg, Va. (Rector Field House)
The short story: Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir continued breaking new records, highlighting a successful weekend at two different meets for the Black and Gold.
VMI Winter Classic
THROWS:
- Hallgrimsdottir threw 22.43 meters in the weight throw, earning herself first place in the event and setting a new VMI facility record by 3.23 meters. Hallgrimsdottir currently sits ninth in NCAA in the weight throw
SPRINTS:
- Kayelyn Tate finished first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.57 seconds. Graduate senior Lauryn Taylor finished shortly behind Tate, earning third with a time of 7.69 seconds
- In the 200-meter, Taylor and Tate finished second and fourth, respectively. Jaliyah Person also set a new personal best with a time of 24.88 seconds
- Jaliyah Person won the 400-meter race, improving her time from Virginia Tech to 56.55. Freshman Tori Lewis finished fourth and Indira O'Neil finished seventh
DISTANCE:
- Madelyn Anderson set a personal best in the mile, finishing third with a time of 5:11.44
HURDLES:
- Senior Sophie Heinold finished in 9.13 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to set a new personal record.
Doc Hale Invitational
THROWS:
- In the weight throw, Hallgrimsdottir earned third place with a throw of 20.97 meters
- Eryn Byrd finished behind Hallgrimsdottir, earning sixth with a best throw of 18.56 meters. Byrd earned fifth in the shot put as well with a mark of 14.92 meters
- Redshirt sophomore Desi Akaolisa qualified for the finals in the shot put, finishing ninth in the process. Like Matalatala and Anaya Harris finished 10th and 11th in the shot put as well in a field that consisted of two Olympians
DISTANCE:
- Nia Warren set a new personal best in the mile race as she recorded a 5:03.86 time to earn 13th in the event
- In the 800-meter run, Anderson set a new personal best with a 2:19.63 mark. Fellow Ram Sabria Wooden set an 800 personal best as well
- Jordyn Evans earned fifth in the 500-meter, clocking a 1:16.67
SPRINTS:
- In the 60-meter prelims, Tate (7.59) and Taylor (7.60) earned ninth and 10th, respectively
- Jaliyah Person finished in 56.66 seconds in the 400-meter race to earn 15th in the event
JUMPS:
- Sydney Carr finished fifth in the triple jump, setting a new personal best in the process. Her mark of 12.03 meters is good for the eighth best in VCU history as well
- In the long jump, Selkis Elong earned ninth with a distance of 5.57 meters
- Nayome Shipp headlined the Rams in the high jump, jumping a height of 1.63 meters
NEXT UP
The Rams next travel to the Darius Dixon Invitational at Liberty University on Friday to Saturday, Feb. 14-15. This is the last regular season meet before they head to the A-10 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
