VCU FALLS IN LATE INNINGS TO LONGWOOD

Score: Longwood 6, VCU 3
Location:  Farmville, Va. (Buddy Bolding Stadium)
Records: VCU 1-3, Longwood 1-2

THE SHORT STORY: Despite a strong start early, and three RBI from freshman catcher Jacob Lee, Longwood plated four late runs to overtake the Rams on the road.

LEADING OFF:
  • Freshman duo Jacob Lee and Nick Flores extended their hitting streaks to four games
  • Lee drove in all three of the Rams' runs and collected his second two-hit game
  • Freshman Nick April-Gath had his first two-hit game
  • James McGrady tossed two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit
  • Broden Palmer made his VCU debut, notching four strikeouts and going two scoreless innings before surrendering one run
  • Longwood secured the first victory of first-year head coach Ray Noe's career

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Flores reached base to lead off the game by a fielding error at third base and Lee doubled him in to get the Rams on the board in the opening frame
  • Longwood plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the second
  • VCU answered with a pair of runs of their own on a Lee two-run single
  • McGrady and Palmer combined for four scoreless innings to hold off the host through six
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lancers evened the score on a throwing error and then added three runs in the home-half of the eighth for the 6-3 final

UP NEXT:
VCU will hit the road to Clemson, S.C., for the Clemson Invitational. The Rams will play a pair of games against host Clemson on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 21-22, and a Sunday matchup against NC A&T.
