The short story:Â VCU trailed Saint Joseph's 47-43 after a 6-0 run with 3:33 remaining in the contest but the Hawks pulled away late.
OPENING TIP:
- Mary-Anna Asare had a game-high 20 points, going 7-of-17 from the field. She added a team-high seven rebounds
- Makennah White had 10 points and went 4-of-9 from the floor
- VCU shot just 29.4 percent from the field while the Hawks were able to shoot 39.6 percent from the floor overall.
- Saint Joseph's was led by Rhian Sokes who had 11 points
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Saint Joseph's led 7-4 with 6:15 left in the first quarter before a 7-0 VCU run gave the Rams an 11-7 lead. The run was capped off by a Cyriah Griffin layup
- The Rams trailed the Hawks just 14-13 at the end of the quarter
- The second quarter was a defensively battle as VCU outscored the Hawks 8-6 and led 21-20 at the half
- Saint Joseph's went on a 12-2 run to build a 30-23 lead with 6:11 left in the third quarter. The Rams would trail 42-33 heading into the fourth quarter
- VCU battled back and used a 6-0 run to get within 47-43 after a Makennah White jumper with 3:33 left
- The Rams got no closer as the Hawks pulled away late
