THE SHORT STORY: VCU remained unbeaten in Atlantic 10 competition with its third consecutive shutout, fighting to a 0-0 draw with George Mason in the Rams' conference home opener.

PITCH SIDE
  • The Rams matched their fewest shots allowed all season, holding the Patriots to just five shots and one on goal
  • Carleigh Frilles and Kanna Matsuhisa paced the Rams with four shots
  • Frilles placed a pair of shots on goal, while Matsuhisa and Y-Van Nguyen notched one each
  • Makaya Parham, Amelia Horton and Jazmin Jackson also added shots for VCU
  • Karpovich, reigning A-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week, carried her scoreless stretch through a full week of play, making a save for her third consecutive shutout
  • The Rams dominated possession, controlling 62% of the game through the first half and finishing the match with 59% possession
  • The Rams drew 10 fouls and committed six of their own in a physical matchup

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Patriots logged the first two threatening attempts on goal, as Christin Grant made a blocked shot in the 16th minute and Michi Hooks drew Karpovich's lone save of the match in the 21st minute
  • Firing back, Frilles tallied four consecutive shots around the 30-minute mark for VCU, inducing a pair of saves and a block by the visitors
  • VCU played a dominant defensive game, not allowing another Patriots shot until the 70th minute, facing a pair of misses and one blocked shot
  • In the final five minutes VCU added two more shots on goal and another just wide, attempting to break the stalemate
  • With a cross coming in from Eller at the corner, Parham lifted a header just high of the crossbar, missing a promising attempt for the Rams by just inches
  • Matsuhisa drove a header to the lower right corner, which was staved off by the gloves of Patriots goalkeeper Victoria Connick, and Parham ripped a hard shot off the rebound that found the far post
  • With 1:30 left to play, Nguyen sent the final attempt of the match into the arms of Connick
  • VCU extended its unbeaten streak to three games, advancing to 1-0-1 in Atlantic 10 play
