RAMS LOSE HEARTBREAKER IN SHOOTOUT AT MONMOUTH, 4-3

Final Score: Monmouth 4, VCU 3 (Double OT)

The Short Story: VCU and Monmouth battled back-and-forth with the Rams forcing overtime on a goal from Josephina Ventimiglia in the 55th minute. The teams went to a shootout where the Hawks won the game.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Ventimiglia scored a career-high two goals on the day. She also recorded four shot attempts
  • Skyler Padgett scored her first goal of the season and had four total shots with two on target
  • Josephine Jense recorded one assist, her first of the season

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • VCU took an early lead in the 5th minute as Ventimiglia opened the scoring. VCU outshot Monmouth 10-3 in the first 30 minutes but led just 1-0 at the halftime
  • The Hawks tied the game at 1-1 out of halftime in the 35th minute
  • VCU retook the lead 2-1 less than four minutes later as Padgett scored off an assist from Jense
  • The Hawks scored two unanswered goals, the first just 58 seconds before the end of the 3rd quarter off a penalty corner to tie the game 2-2. Monmouth took the lead at 3-2 in the 53rd minute on a goal from Tucker
  • VCU forced overtime with Ventimiglia's second goal of the afternoon in the 55th minute.
  • The Rams outshot Monmouth 9-1 in the fourth quarter but scored just once while the Hawks converted on their only shot of the quarter
  • The two teams couldn't find a breakthrough in either overtime period and the Hawks won the penalty shootout 4-2 to win the game.
