- App State controlled the opening quarter, outshooting VCU 5-0, but the teams were tied 0-0 at the end of the quarter
- VCU opened the scoring in the 26th minute as Fehr scored following a penalty corner and on an assist from Afanso
- App State tied the game 1-1 in the 38th minute on a goal from Donovan
- The Mountaineers took the lead at 2-1 in the 45th minute after scoring a penalty stroke goal
- VCU forced overtime after Goodwin converted a penalty corner with just 1:46 left in the fourth quarter
- The Rams struck early in overtime after Radel carried the ball upfield and fed Padgett who scored from just inside the top of the circle
