WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS AT ODU IN SEASON OPENER, 2-1

THE SHORT STORY: VCU only trailed ODU 7-6 in shots on goal and 13-10 overall but the Rams were unable to convert and overcome a first half deficit.

PITCH SIDE
  • Kanna Matsuhisa scored her first goal of the season and tied for a team-high two shots on goal
  • Allison Karpovich made five saves in goal on the seven shots faced
  • Three Rams recorded two shots with Kendyl Sarver also recording two shots on goal
  • Milica Bulatovic recorded two total shots
  • ODU's Rhea Kijowski and Yuliia Khrystiuk each scored once
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCU controlled possession of the match early, earning three corner kicks in the first six minutes
  • Sarver tested ODU's goalkeeper Emily Bredek in the sixth minute but her shot was saved
  • The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute after Kijowski's was able to convert on a deflected clearance
  • ODU doubled its lead in the 79th minute after Khrystiuk scored on a goal from distance
  • Matsuhisa got VCU back within 2-1 in the 90th minute following a VCU free kick. She shieled the ball on the edge of the box, turned the defender and hit a one-time shot into the far corner of the net

VCU travels to Liberty to face the Flames on Thursday, Aug. 22. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
