Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

RAMS DROP HEARTBREAKER AT LIBERTY, 2-1

THE SHORT STORY: VCU and Liberty battled back and forth but the Rams' fell in a heartbreaker after conceding a late set piece goal off a corner kick.

PITCH SIDE
  • Kanna Matsuhisa scored her second goal in as many games this season. Matsuhisa also recored a team-high four shot attempts including three shots on goal
  • Milica Bulatovic recorded an assist on Matsuhisa's goal, her first of the season. She also had one shot attempt
  • Liberty outshot VCU 12-4 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal. The Flames held 54 percent of the game's possession to VCU's 46 percent
  • Allison Karpovich made four saves in goal on six shots faced
  • Liberty got goals from Halle Engle and Ivy Garner
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCU had a chance to go up 1-0 in the 10th minute as Matsuhisa's shot from inside the penalty mark was blocked by a Liberty defender
  • The Flames took the lead in the 14th minute with a goal from Engle
  • Matsuhisa had a chance to equalize in the 22nd minute as she turned two defenders near midfield before dribble and releasing a shot near the 18-yard box but her attempt was saved
  • The Rams held the Flames off in the second half before equalizing in the 66th minute. After a ball was played into the box, Bulatovic beat the keeper to the ball and passed to Matsuhisa who headed it past the goalkeeper
  • Liberty retook the lead and scored the game-winner in the 81st minute as Garner scored off a corner kick

VCU hosts NC State in its home opener on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
