GAME ONE RECAP
The short story: Junior
Casey Kleinman drove in a pair of runs and VCU pitching held the Revolutionaries to just seven hits on the way to victory in Friday's opener.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Kleinman finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. He reached base three times
- VCU starter Jack Hoeymans and sophomore reliever Brian Curley each logged outstanding outings. Hoeymans (2-2) shut out GW for three innings and struck out five. Curley tossed six innings of two-run ball to earn his first save of the year. He struck out four
- Senior shortstop William Bean singled, doubled and scored a pair of runs for the Black and Gold
THE STRETCH
- VCU took control with a three-run third and never looked back. Bean hit a leadoff double down the right field line and later scored on a wild pitch. The Rams tacked on another run via an RBI groundout from graduate DH Eli Weisner. A short time later, redshirt junior Jake Thilges chopped a ball over third base and into left field for an RBI double
- The Rams eventually built a 5-0 advantage. Kleinman provided an RBI single in the fourth, as well as a sacrifice fly in the sixth. VCU added an insurance run in the eighth when senior third baseman Brandon Eike singled through the left side to plate Kleinman
- VCU pitching struck out nine and surrendered just one extra base hit
GAME TWO RECAP
The short story: Thilges led a 13-hit VCU attack with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, but timely George Washington hitting and several Rams' miscues helped the Revs earn the doubleheader split.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Thilges finished the doubleheader 4-for-8 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs
- In all, four Rams turned in multi-hit performances, including Kleinman (2-for-5), Eike (2-for-4) and freshman infielder Chris McHugh (2-for-5). Kleinman and Eike each doubled for the Rams
- Senior centerfielder Cooper Benzin drove in two for VCU
- Sophomore righthander Cam Nuckols hurled two innings of one-hit relief for the Rams
THE STRETCH
- GW touched up VCU pitching for 10 hits, and the Rams also hit three batters. The Black and Gold were also hurt by three errors in the field
- George Washington took command of the game with four in the fifth inning. Following a sacrifice fly, Ellis Schwartz ripped a double to left center to score a run. A VCU error yielded another run, and McGwire Tuffy added a fourth with an RBI groundout, to give the Revs a 9-5 lead. They would not trail again.
- The Revolutionaries used a five-run fourth inning, punctuated by a Tuffy two-run double, to take a 5-3 lead. The Rams responded with a pair in the bottom half of the inning, including a Kleinman RBI single, to tie the game at 5-5
