The short story: Junior third baseman
Brandon Eike ripped a base-clearing, go-ahead double to punctuate a five-run eighth inning as VCU rallied past Davidson Saturday afternoon for a fourth straight victory.
LEADING OFF
- Eike finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in four runs on a pair of doubles
- VCU redshirt junior right fielder Anderson Fulk homered for the second straight day reached base four times. He drove home a pair
- Junior pitcher Cade Dressler (2-1) earned the win for VCU. He twirled 5.1 innings of shutout relief. The lefty scattered three hits and walked just one
- Davison was led by Aidan Rice, who went 2-for-4
THE STRETCH
- VCU trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but the Rams loaded the bases with nobody out on a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. A short time later, redshirt junior second baseman Griffin Boone and Fulk drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to tie the game at 4-4. Eike followed by driving a hard, diving line drive into right center to clear the bases
- Davidson punched first, leading off with a pair of singles that resulted in two opening inning runs for the Wildcats
- Fulk stayed hot for VCU, homering in the third to make it 2-1 Davidson
- Two more singles in the fourth inning for Davidson stretched its lead to 4-1
- Eike also stroked an RBI double to the left centerfield wall in the fifth to trim the Wildcats' advantage to 4-2
